Delaware, Ohio was founded in 1808 by Moses Byxbe after he arrived to the area from Massachusetts 4 years prior. Before Byxbe's arrival, Delaware was home to the Mingo and Shawnee Indian tribes. Fun fact, the local park in Delaware is named Mingo, after the Indian tribes. Byxbe accquired a large portion of land after the Revolutionary War and planned to map out a town near the Olentangy River. On March 11, 1808, Delaware officially became a city as a plan for it was filed. Delaware at the time was a very small city, but that didn't stop the potential of it becoming the capital of Ohio. Originally the capital was located in Chillicothe, but it was to be moved to either Delaware or our current capital now, Columbus. When it came time to vote, Delaware only lost by one vote. Through the years, esepcially after the War of 1812, Delaware began to grow as more and more people were moving to the city and starting their lives there.
One of the most prominent and famous people to settle in Delaware at this time was former president Rutherford B. Hayes. Born in a quaint and modest home, Hayes and his parents would only live in Delaware for a short period of time, but he would later on visit frequently, and even attend the college there, Ohio Wesleyan University. A BP gas station now stands where his historical home once was, with a historical marker placed right outside.
As years passed, Delaware began to build and expand. Hotels, businesses, restaurants, and much more came to life in the city. In 1842, Ohio Wesleyan University was founded by the Methodist Church. The university attracted many more people to Delaware, and the addition of Railroads 9 years later helped with just that. Delaware was also a major part of the Underground Railroad, helping a number of slaves to safety. Delaware was now easily connected to other big cities, granting more access to more people.
When the Civil War happened, Delaware played a major role in it. In the city there were two Union camps, named Camp Delaware. These camps were special, as this camp was one of the very few that had African-Americans training and fighting for the Union. This camp would end up being very beneficial to the Union in the actual war.
After the war, Delaware began to continue to move in the right direction. The city was expanding and much more was happening. One major attraction was the historic Strand Theatre. Built in 1916, the Strand is the 10th longest operating movie theater in the whole country. Impressive, right? Owned by various businesses such as Amatos, an Italian restaurant located in the city, or even Ohio Wesleyan, the local college, it had much success over the years. It is currently a non-profit organization, and brings in many people.
Delaware, Ohio has much to offer nowadays. It is a very vibrant, energetic, and successful city, and there are many reasons as to why. With many educational opportunities, such as Delaware Hayes or Buckeye Valley High School, restaurants like Buns or Old Bag of Nails, and a plethora of other businesses, Delaware is the place to currently be. Just 30 miles north of Columbus, it is strategically placed in a very promising location.
Delaware isn't all just city though. With Delaware State Park just north of the city, it has become a huge attraction. People can camp, fish, go boating, swim in the lake, play frisbee golf, and do much more there. Not to forget, it's beautiful! Being surrounded by nature and getting a little break from the city life is just what people need sometimes. On top of the state park, there are also many local parks in Delaware. Smith, Mingo, and Blue Limestone are just to name a few. Whether you want to play tennis, go on a walk, or just hang out, these parks are perfect for just that. Delaware incorportates both the city and nature life, which is great for people who want just a little bit of both.
Delaware, Ohio has and always will be a successful city. Ever since it was founded in 1808, the future of Delaware has always been promising. It has been nationally ranked multiple times as one of the best cities to live in, and everyone can see why. If you haven't been to Delaware, I highly reccommend to.
